(Kisumu) – Kisumu County joined global celebrations for World Fisheries Day 2024 on November 21, emphasizing sustainable practices and better livelihoods for fishing communities.
This year’s theme, “Collaborative Governance for Blue Transformation and Sustainable Investments in Fisheries,” highlighted the need for protecting aquatic ecosystems while promoting sustainable fisheries. The national event took place at Luanda K’otieno Beach in Siaya County.
In Kisumu, the County Government, in partnership with the Healthy Food Africa project, donated 100 portable, non-carcinogenic food racks to nine fish trading groups, including Tetemesha, Kaka Saa Dhi, Chiew Chon Ber, Kodima Kanyaya, Oneno Group, Kondele Twins, Kondele Fresh Fish, Obunga Pap Mbuta, and Strong Abilities Group.
The portable racks are designed to improve food safety by preventing contamination from animals, dust, and other external factors. Raised two meters off the ground and easy to clean, the racks will help ensure fish quality, boosting sales and reducing health risks.
At the distribution event held at the ABDP Regional Office, County Director of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Madam Susan Claire Adhiambo, emphasized the importance of maintaining high food safety standards. She warned traders against poor handling practices that compromise fish quality, noting their vital role in the fish value chain.
Traders expressed gratitude, with group leaders praising the County Government for its support. They reported excitement over the anticipated improvement in food safety and business practices.
However, the groups also requested further assistance, including umbrellas and solar lamps, to facilitate trading during rainy or dark conditions.
County fisheries officers, including Mr. Kennedy Owiti and Mr. Duncan Ochieng, attended the event, lending their support to the initiative.
