(Mombasa) – The Kidongo fish landing site, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving the fishing industry, was officially launched by Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Ali Joho. The Sh175 million project is expected to transform the fishing sector in Mombasa County by providing essential facilities for fish storage, processing, and market access.
Speaking at the Majaoni area in Mombasa County, Joho emphasized the importance of the project for local fishermen. He explained that the new site would help address long-standing challenges faced by those in the fishing industry. Among the key features of the site is a cold storage room, which will enable fishermen to store their catch properly, ensuring better preservation and reducing wastage. Additionally, the facility will include modern equipment to facilitate the processing of fish, further improving the efficiency and quality of local fish production.
“We have seen our fishermen face numerous challenges over the years,” Joho said during the launch. “This project marks a significant shift towards better support for the fishing community in Mombasa County.”
The new landing site is also expected to support the creation of a market where fish can be sold directly to consumers, enhancing access and trade for local producers. The project is seen as a step toward improving the livelihoods of many people within the region who depend on the fishing industry for their income.
Betsy Njagi, the Principal Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, also spoke at the event, highlighting the inclusive nature of the project. She assured that women would have an active role in the development of the new market, with opportunities for them to sell fish and participate in various aspects of the Blue Economy sector.
Njagi’s statement reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that women are equally represented in the economic benefits arising from the project. She noted that this initiative was part of a broader effort to empower women and integrate them into the growing blue economy sector.
The Kidongo fish landing site is expected to have a long-term impact on Mombasa’s fishing community, with both men and women benefitting from improved facilities, storage, and access to markets.
