AirAsia X Launches Direct Flights Between Nairobi and Kuala Lumpur

(Nairobi) – AirAsia X, the long-haul, low-cost arm of AirAsia, has officially launched direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi, marking a significant development in Kenya’s aviation sector. The inaugural flight landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on November 16, 2024, symbolizing the strengthening of ties between Kenya and the broader Asian region.

The new route is expected to enhance Kenya’s position as a prime destination for both tourists and business travelers from Malaysia and Southeast Asia. It will also serve as an important link to promote trade and investment opportunities between the two regions. The introduction of this direct service aligns with Kenya’s strategy to diversify its tourism markets and foster deeper international connections.

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, emphasized the importance of the route, stating, “Kenya is now firmly established as a regional hub and a leader in air transport across the continent.” Miano added that the new link would not only benefit tourism but also open doors to new trade, investment, and cultural collaborations between Kenya and Southeast Asia.

AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail also expressed enthusiasm about the launch. He highlighted the airline’s commitment to providing affordable air travel to underserved destinations. He noted that more than 70% of the seats on the inaugural flight were filled, reflecting strong demand for the new route.

The Nairobi-Kuala Lumpur flights will operate four times a week, offering more than 156,000 seats annually. One-way fares for the route start at Sh25,685 (USD 199), making it an affordable option for travelers seeking to explore Kenya or engage in business in the region.

This development follows a recent agreement between the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and AirAsia to enhance connectivity and collaboration in promoting tourism across both regions. The new direct flights are expected to further strengthen Kenya’s profile as a key destination for visitors from Southeast Asia and beyond.
