Uber Drives KSh 2.7 Billion Tourism Impact

(Nairobi) – Uber Kenya has unveiled its inaugural Economic Impact Report, revealing its substantial contributions to Kenya’s economy through ride-hailing and delivery services. The report, commissioned by Uber and conducted by research firm Public First, emphasizes the platform’s role in job creation, economic empowerment, and the growth of small businesses.

The report demonstrates Uber’s significant impact on employment, particularly for youth and women, while showcasing its influence on businesses across Kenya. Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, Uber East Africa General Manager Imran Manji noted that the company plays a pivotal role in enhancing mobility and delivery services while empowering drivers and delivery partners.

“The study also focuses on the sector’s potential for future growth, calling for continued collaboration with stakeholders, including government agencies, to maximize the benefits of ride-hailing platforms,” said Manji.

The report highlights that 57% of Uber drivers and delivery partners choose the platform over other opportunities because it provides flexible work options. These platforms offer new income streams, particularly for underserved communities, further contributing to Kenya’s economic development.

Uber Eats Kenya General Manager Kiu Mbugua pointed out that the delivery platform has expanded opportunities for restaurants and retailers, enabling them to reach more customers and optimize their business strategies.

“In addition, access to insights such as customer preferences, peak ordering times, and popular items enables merchants to optimize their offerings and tailor their strategies to meet consumer needs,” Mbugua said.

According to the report, the Uber Eats app has created an additional KSh 534 million (approx. $3.6 million) in value for restaurants in Kenya by providing scalable delivery infrastructure. Furthermore, it estimates an additional KSh 2.7 billion (approx. $18.4 million) has been generated for Kenya’s tourism economy through Uber’s operations.

Economic Contributions by Uber in Kenya Value (KSh) Value (USD)
Added Value for Restaurants (Uber Eats) 534 million 3.6 million

Technology data and public policy expert Phillip Thigo emphasized the broader role of online platforms like Uber in breaking barriers to employment, creating jobs, and driving entrepreneurial innovation. “Platforms like Uber are unlocking economic opportunities and enabling job creation across the country,” he said.

The report also underlines Uber’s role in enabling small businesses to adapt to consumer trends, such as leveraging delivery systems for additional revenue streams.

Uber’s Economic Impact Report is expected to strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, including government agencies, to maximize the benefits of digital platforms and drive further economic growth.
