EU Responds to Concerns Over Delayed Projects in Kenya

(Nairobi) – The European Union (EU) Delegation to Kenya has addressed concerns raised over two EU-funded projects in the counties of Taita Taveta and Kwale. These projects are part of the EU’s ongoing support for Kenya’s devolution process, which was introduced with the 2010 Constitution to foster local economic development.

According to the EU, the projects in question, a market in Kwale and a banana processing plant in Taita Taveta, have encountered significant hurdles. The Kwale market, although completed and inaugurated, has never been operational due to a legal dispute between the local county government and the contractor involved.

Similarly, the banana processing plant in Taita Taveta faced challenges that led the EU to suspend its funding. The issue stemmed from the county’s failure to provide the necessary counterpart funding, a key requirement for continuing the project.

In response to the concerns, the EU emphasized its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of freedom of expression continues to be a key aspect of its relationship with Kenya and its local governments.. The organization reaffirmed its position that it welcomes public vigilance and that any credible allegations of misuse of funds will be thoroughly investigated.
