(Nairobi) – Britam has introduced a new insurance product specifically designed for women, aiming to offer both medical and non-medical coverage. The product, named Malkia, provides financial assistance for conditions such as cervical, ovarian, and breast cancer, as well as support for skin conditions and pregnancy-related challenges.
The Malkia cover offers a minimum annual premium of Sh620, making it an affordable option for women seeking health insurance. Upon diagnosis of major conditions like breast, cervical, or ovarian cancer, policyholders will receive a lump-sum cancer cash benefit to help cover medical expenses and living costs. A second cash payment is provided when treatment begins, ensuring continued financial support throughout the recovery process.
Acting CEO and principal officer of Britam Micro-Insurance, Evah Kimani, emphasized the importance of the new cover, stating, “Female Wellness Cover (Malkia) stands by women through life’s toughest moments, offering peace of mind when it’s needed most. Whether facing a cancer diagnosis, managing skin conditions, or navigating the journey of motherhood, the cover ensures women have the support they deserve.”
In addition to cancer coverage, Malkia also includes benefits for skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It even offers artificial intelligence-assisted pregnancy support, further highlighting Britam’s commitment to addressing the unique healthcare needs of women.
Cancer remains a leading health concern in Kenya, with approximately 27,000 people dying from cancer each year. The most prevalent types of cancer affecting women are breast and cervical cancer, which together account for 23 percent of all cancer-related deaths in the country. Unfortunately, many cancer cases are diagnosed at late stages due to inadequate diagnostic facilities and high treatment costs.
Malkia aims to ease this burden by offering financial support for treatment and care, helping to improve the chances of early intervention and recovery. With this initiative, Britam seeks to provide women with greater access to affordable healthcare, ultimately improving their quality of life and ensuring that they have the necessary resources during their most challenging times.
