Kiambu County Builds KSh 550M Market in Githunguri

(Kiambu) – The Kiambu County Government, in collaboration with the National Government, is constructing a modern, three-level market in Githunguri town, aimed at enhancing local trade and commerce. The project, valued at KSh 550 million, will support economic growth in the region.

The market is being funded through a partnership where the National Government will contribute KSh 400 million, while the Kiambu County Government will allocate KSh 150 million. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced that the project’s design, developed by the county’s Public Works Directorate, includes several features to improve the business environment in the area.

The new market will have a basement car parking lot with space for 178 vehicles. The first floor will include 655 parking slots, a social hall, a daycare facility, and a dispensary. The second floor will house an ICT hub, a restaurant, and 768 trading stalls, providing a comprehensive space for business activities and community services.

Governor Wamatangi reassured local traders that there would be a smooth, temporary relocation process to allow construction to proceed. He also assured the traders that the allocation of slots in the new market would be done transparently to ensure only genuine traders benefit from the new facilities.

The market will be built in two phases, with the first phase expected to benefit around 2,080 traders. This initiative is expected to significantly boost the local economy and provide a modern, well-equipped environment for business growth.

Area Member of Parliament, Gathoni wa Muchomba, emphasized the importance of the project and urged the County Government to ensure fairness and transparency during the relocation process to prioritize local traders.
