(Turkana) – Senior government officials convened in Turkana County on Friday to advance the implementation of affordable housing and market development projects. The meeting focused on geotechnical and topographic surveys to gather essential data for the design and construction of the proposed projects.
The initiative, directed by the President, prioritises key infrastructure developments across Turkana, including markets and housing projects. Among the targeted developments are Lodwar Municipal Market, Kalakol Fish Market, Kakuma Municipal Market, and Lowerangak Fish Market. Housing projects include Lokorio Police Housing, Lokori Affordable Housing, Turkwel Economic Stimulus Project, and housing projects in Loima, Naduat, and Kapedo.
Educational institutions will also benefit, with Turkana University College, Lodwar KMTC, Lodwar TVC, and Lorugum TVC identified as recipients of development projects. Additionally, the new Lokichogio Sub-County and its former headquarters in Kakuma will receive affordable housing support at sites still to be determined.
The Head of Compliance for the Rift Valley Region, Edwin Chepsiror, urged government teams to expedite their work to ensure timely completion of the surveys and project implementation. “Moving quickly on these tasks is crucial for the success of these projects,” he said.
Turkana County Commissioner Julius Kavita advised that committee members form three teams to facilitate faster and more efficient delivery of their assignments. This collaborative approach is expected to streamline the preliminary surveys and ensure that accurate data is collected to guide the project designs.
County Housing Officer Brian Kangogo announced that another meeting is scheduled for next week to maintain the momentum of the project implementation. This upcoming session will further address challenges and refine strategies to fast-track the initiatives.
These projects are expected to significantly improve the quality of life in Turkana County by providing better housing options, modern markets, and improved facilities for education and law enforcement.
