Zetech University Tackles Hyena Attacks with New Student Housing

(Weitethie) – Zetech University has announced plans to construct new hostel facilities to address the growing accommodation needs of its students, particularly those residing at the Weitethie campus, an area known for security concerns due to hyena attacks. The project, set to begin in early 2025, will be developed gradually, according to demand, and aims to provide students with affordable, safe housing.

During a meeting with stakeholders, Vice Chancellor Professor Njenga Munene highlighted the importance of providing students with decent and affordable accommodation to enhance their learning experience. He acknowledged the inconvenience that students face when forced to rent housing outside the campus, particularly in the nearby estates of Weitethie, Mang’u, and Ruiru.

“Next year, our focus will be on infrastructural development, particularly constructing accommodation facilities for the students,” said Prof. Munene. “We know how inconvenient it is for students to find accommodation outside the institution. The houses will be affordable and will be constructed progressively based on demand.”

The announcement has been met with excitement by students, particularly those at the Weitethie campus. For many of them, this development comes as a relief, as they have been living in an area that has experienced a series of hyena attacks. In recent months, the hyenas have caused significant concern, with reports of several residents, including mothers and children, being mauled to death.

Many students at Weitethie campus, while not directly affected by the attacks, have expressed concern about the animals, especially since they often study late into the night and have to walk through the estate to their homes. The new hostel facilities will provide them with a safer and more secure living arrangement, eliminating the risk of encountering hyenas late at night.

“This is good news. Staying inside the institution will create a better learning environment, and it will also offer security from the marauding hyenas that have been terrorizing the locals,” said Philip Kabue, a student at the Weitethie campus.

In addition to the hostel project, Prof. Munene also announced plans to construct state of the art sports facilities to enhance the university’s competitiveness in co-curricular activities. The new sports facilities will be designed to support a variety of sports and improve the overall fitness of students and staff.

“This is another area of focus for us. We want to make the institution a sporting powerhouse,” said the Vice Chancellor. “The new facilities will boost our competitiveness in sports, but more importantly, they will offer our students a better learning environment.”
