(Moscow) – North Korea has increased its involvement in Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine by deploying thousands of soldiers and advanced artillery, deepening its alliance with Moscow. The move follows a defense pact signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June.
A senior North Korean military leader, Colonel General Kim Yong Bok, is now stationed in Russia, overseeing the integration of over 11,000 North Korean soldiers into Russian forces. Colonel General Kim, previously known for his leadership of North Korea’s special forces, has been a key figure in North Korea’s strategic operations but was rarely seen in public before this mission. His deployment highlights North Korea’s direct support for Russia in its conflict with Ukraine and its confrontation with the West.
South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) disclosed that North Korea has also supplied Russia with heavy artillery systems. Among the weapons are 170mm self-propelled guns and 240mm multiple rocket launchers, which required North Korean personnel to train Russian soldiers in their use. Images circulating on Russian social media platforms show these artillery systems being transported by rail, providing evidence of significant weapons transfers.
North Korea’s Contributions | Details |

Troops | Over 11,000 soldiers stationed in Russia |

The NIS reports that North Korean troops are operating in the Kursk region, a hotly contested area where Ukrainian forces recently made gains. Some North Korean soldiers have reportedly engaged in combat alongside Russian marine and airborne units, but casualty figures remain unclear.
The timing of this cooperation has raised concerns among Western countries. The United States recently approved the use of long-range ATACMS missiles by Ukraine, which were used in an attack on a Russian ammunition depot in Bryansk. Moscow condemned this move, accusing the U.S. of escalating the conflict. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized Washington, stating that it is “determined to prolong the war in Ukraine.”
The partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang offers mutual advantages. Russia benefits from North Korea’s troops and artillery as its resources are stretched thin. Meanwhile, North Korea gains real-world combat experience for its forces and strengthens ties with a major global power.
Colonel General Kim’s involvement also aligns with North Korea’s military goals. He previously accompanied North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during inspections of artillery and special forces exercises. His new role in Russia allows him to apply these experiences while enhancing North Korea’s combat capabilities.
Western nations, led by the U.S., have condemned North Korea’s actions.
